FDR strongly believed that the government should treat an intense depression just as seriously as the nation treats a threatening invader.
FDR was elected during the depths of the Depression and immediately acted to boost moral. He declared a bank holiday and gave "fireside chats" on the radio to raise confidence. Due to his actions during this difficult time he has become one of the most remembered presidents in history. He expanded the government's role the most of all presidents in order to fight the depression. This is why the people admired him, he was willing to use the government to protect and work for them rather than leaving them to struggle on their own.
During his "first hundred days" in office FDR devoted his time to working with congress to make a myriad of laws, programs and systems to fight the depression. Within those first hundred days the common panic stricken riots stopped and the country returned to a organized, civilized state. The new laws he created in this time became part of what is referred to as the “New Deal”.
